Panama has two distinct seasons during the year. The dry season (Panamanian summer), extends from December to April and the "green" season (Panamanian winter) extends from May to November.
The "green" season is best for surf on the Pacific coast; Panama receives all the swells developing in the southern hemisphere. Optimum swell direction is from 195° to 230°.
The weather in Panama is very predictable. A weather report saying: "clear this morning, cloudy in the afternoon with showers around five o'clock" will work just fine on a daily basis. The average temperature year round is /32°C and water temperatures average /28°C.
The dry season, or Panamanian summer, delivers consistently clear skies. This is due to the fact that the intertropical convergence zone (which follows the sun's declination) is pulled south of Panama, bringing in the northeast trade winds, that blow constantly, giving us offshore winds on the Pacific coast all day and preventing the formation of vertical convection cells, therefore we get no rain during these months.
Panama is a place where you will find some unique natural phenomena.
Mean sea level on the Atlantic is a 9 inches lower than that of the Pacific. The heights of high and low tides in the Pacific Ocean can differ by more than 20 feet; in the Atlantic Ocean the tide difference rarely exceeds two feet.
You might also find it curious that due to Panama´s geographical position it appears that the sun rises in the south from the Pacific Ocean, and sets in the north, into the Atlantic Ocean.
